There are many excellent essential oils out there that do wonders for several different skin conditions. When purchasing essential oils, keep in mind that they are totally different from fragrance oils, which are synthetic and may not be safe to use around the skin; essential oils are always natural. Essential oils should not be applied straight to the skin, as they may cause irritation, but combined with milder carrier oils, they can reduce the signs of aging which help keep your skin healthy and fresh.

Many personal care products contain essential oils which have been blended for their therapeutic properties, and not simply their scent. Following is a list of of the most widely used and versatile essential oils used in skin care.

Lavender Essential Oil

Lavender oil is extremely gentle, yet also a powerful healer. It’s oil originates from the steam distillation of the flowering tops of the plant. The oil suits most skin types, but is especially good for acne, athlete’s foot, eczema, dermititis, burns, psoriasis, ringworm, stings and insect bites. It’s one of the few essential oils that is so gentle it can be applied neat (undiluted) towards the skin to heal burns and insect bites. It’s readily available in the lower price range.

Rosemary Essential Oil

This oil’s stimulating and rejuvenating effects help alleviate stress-related disorders, for example nervous exhaustion, and can ease headaches. It stimulates circulation towards the scalp, reduces oiliness in the hair and scalp, which help relieve dermatitis, psoriasis and dandruff.

Neem Essential Oil

Oil in the seed or fruit of the neem tree has been used in traditional Indian medicine for several years. Neem oil is an effective treatment for many skin conditions and can be used being an ingredient in soap to help treat oily or greasy skin. Neem oil may also soothe and reduce the symptoms of eczema and acne.

Lemon Oil

Lemon tones and tightens the skin and encourages healing. It’s also used to treat varicose veins. Lemon is cleansing and is used to treat small cuts. Only use lemon oil inside a night-time blend as it can be photo toxic with sun exposure.

Carrot seed oil

Carrot seed oil is definitely an amber-colored oil that is extracted from carrot seeds. It’s ideal for dry, sun-damaged, mature, or wrinkled skin. If your skin gets cracked and dry during the winter months, or if your skin appears dull and tired, then applying a product with carrot seed oil can help get your glow back. Carrot seed oil is good for dry and oily complexions.

Rose Essential Oil

There are two types of rose essential oils available on the market. The superior grade for healing and skin care is rose otto instead of rose absolute a slightly less athentic and less costly version. Rose essential oil is healing for thread veins, eczema, dry and aged skin. It’s also in the more expensive price range because of the amount of roses required to produce just an ounce of essential oil.

Tea Tree Essential Oil

Distilled from the leaves of an Australian tree, tea tree essential oil has a clean, medicinal scent along with a pale yellow color. It is a powerful antibacterial and antieptic essential oil. That’s why it has been a well known ingredient in a lot of skin care products used for treating acne.

Sandalwood Essential Oil

Originates from the roots and the heartwood of the Sandalwood tree. It is also priced at it’s fragrance and it’s relaxing and sedative qualities. Again this essential oil is useful and suitable for most skin types, but is especially helpful for acne, eczema, cracked and chapped skin. It’s in the higher price range for essential oils.
